The final stats aren’t in yet but we can tell you that nearly 30 professional artists taught close to 1000 students! Artists shared their abundant knowledge in elementary, middle and high school art classes. Casey art teacher Molly Hoverstock brought her students to the ReSource Yard to spend 5 classroom hours with artist Cynthia Marsh. Cynthia introduced the kids to ReSource and helped them collect items and objects to create “upcycled clocks.” Boulder High art teacher Virginia Schick brought in artist Bill Stoehr to work closely with her advanced portfolio arts class. Bill helped the students develop a loose portrait style with multi-media such as layering acrylic and charcoal. The students were encouraged to develop their own unique voice and to begin viewing themselves as artists. From one student, “this program showed me a new form of art I had never seen before! And it was amazing!”

Ed Links is completing its twelfth year and the teachers love it! Why is this program suddenly booming? The generous support of the students at the Youth Opportunities Program/Youth Opportunities Advisory Board and OpenArts donors keep Ed Links thriving. The City of Boulder’s YOP/YOAB program is driven by students that grant thousands of dollars yearly to programs serving the children of our city. OpenArts is very grateful for the funding to keep Ed Links in the schools and help arts education thrive in Boulder.

Course Description and Details

Pottery with Tom Cannon

Come study pottery with master ceramist, Tom Cannon, at his studio in beautiful South Boulder. Tom has been creating masterpieces in clay for over thirty years. Thirteen of those years were spent in Japan where he studied in the lineage of Kawai Kanjiro, one of the most important ceramic artists of the 20th century. Tom’s work continues to reflect the influences of the years he spent in the Orient and of the time he spent studying with Betty Woodman at the University of Colorado and at her studio, which was then in Boulder. Tom has built his studio onto his house, which reflects a lifetime dedicated to making pottery. His home is filled with pots. His front room is a dedicated showroom for his ceramics and bronze vessels. His kitchen cupboards abound with the plates and bowls that he made. His mother was a potter and he proudly displays her work above his kitchen cabinets, along with antique sake jugs that he brought back from Japan. The studio has large south-facing windows, which fill the space with sunlight, making it a very enjoyable place to have fun and be creative.

Tom has planned the class for beginners to have fun with clay. The class will start with hand building. Students will have the opportunity to make a variety of objects. Prior experience is not required, but those with experience can enjoy being challenged.

For those who wish to continue exploring the possibilities with clay, Tom has electric potter’s wheels and will offer instruction on throwing as well. Students will decorate and glaze their creations. Then they will be fired and can be brought home as tangible accomplishments of creative expression. The clay is waiting for you!

Still Life Drawing
To learn to draw, you must train not only your hands but your eyes as well; having the ability to look and see, to observe and scrutinize. With an emphasis on observational skills throughout, this class will cover the basics of all types of drawing: line, tone, perspective and composition; equipping you with the ability to produce coherent still life drawings while including a foundation to pursue any kind of drawing in the future. During the 6 weeks you will also experiment with a variety of materials such as graphite pencils, charcoal, pastel and felt tip pens so you can determine your own preference.

This class will involve working from still life in a relaxed studio setting 3 hours per night [for one night per week] over a 6 week period. The course is open to beginners but each student will be given individual attention with regards to his or her own skills. Participants are required to bring an object to include in the still life set up.
