Course Description and Details

The aim of this six-week class is to acquire the ability to identify and recreate the inherent hues that make up any particular color. This will be achieved through a series of prescribed and self-prescribed exercises where you will illustrate many aspects of color theory simply and quickly. The class is suitable for anyone who uses color, such as painters, fashion designers, interior designers, etc, or if you have a limited knowledge of color theory or lack confidence when using color. Please note: the ability to draw or paint is not required.

The class explains: color, hue, brightness, saturation, color temperature, color interaction, additive/subtractive color and the illusion of space. You will learn how to create secondary colors, tertiary colors and chromatic grays by mixing paint using the three primary colors only. You will also learn how colors can be affected and changed by their surrounding colors. Ultimately, you will recreate the colors perceived from an object or photograph of your choice using the knowledge and skills that you have acquired during the course. Initially, gouache paint is used but other colored material can be used, such as paper or fabric, as the course progresses.

Learning Outcomes

Students will
• Learn the basic science of color theory through practical and experimental use of color
• Gain experience and confidence in selecting the appropriate colors that mix together to achieve the desired color
